Blue Shield Dental Insurance Offers Coverage to the Residents of California

As of April 2009, 32,000 physicians and 303 hospitals are part of its HMO network while they have 65,000 physicians and 348 hospitals in their PPO network. Membership reached 3.4 million as of February 2009, of which 1.2 million were enrolled in HMOs and 1.56 million in PPOs.

With a PPO plan, you have the flexibility to see any dentist you want although you will pay less in out-of-pocket costs if you use a dentist within the PPO network, which currently consists of some 20,000 general and specialty-care dentists practicing in the state. Blue Shield’s Dental PPO plan is the perfect complement to existing medical plans, since it allows you to provide your family with comprehensive dental benefits with the convenience of having just one point of contact when availing of customer support.
PPO Blue Shield dental insurance offers 100% coverage for two comprehensive annual cleanings, including dental X-rays, by network providers, fixed and low copayments for basic and major services provided by in-network dentists, no waiting period for preventive and diagnostic procedures, a $50 individual annual deductible per member, a $1,000 maximum benefit per member per calendar year, of which $500 can be used for non-network benefits and orthodontic benefits for children and adults. And you will enjoy benefits whether you use network or non-network providers. Pregnant members will also be able to avail of enhanced dental benefits.
Smile PPO and Value Smile PPO Blue Shield dental insurance are offered independent of Blue Shield medical plans. Smile PPO and Value Smile PPO plans offer the same benefits as the Dental PPO Plan, but Value Smile has a lower individual annual deductible of $25 per member and a $500 maximum benefit per member per calendar year. Value Smile PPO also offers no coverage for major services. As of April 2009, monthly rates to cover an individual adult or child is $39.70 for Smile PPO and $21.40 for Value Smile, and $139.50 and $75.30 respectively for family coverage.
