If you would like to find space to build a home office in your house, you might need to create your own desk to comfort yourself while you work. Just spend a few hours to set up it as you want.
What you should know & have:
- Time: 2 Hours
- Cost: $100 – $250
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Step 1: Design your Desk First
You might include these following lists for your own desk:
- Vertical slots for shelves, photos, artwork and necessary things for your work
- Recessed cups to keep pens and other stationeries
- A chic hideaway part which can glide your laptop smoothly when you have to manage artworks. It also protects your work from kids’ grasp.
- A desk which can be placed in a corner of your office. It is 60” and 48” along both walls.
- Sides which are 20” of each.
- A Desk sit which is 30” tall.

Step 2: Prepare Desktop
You should cut out two pieces from plywood to strengthen your desktop. Then draft the opening for the notebook/laptop part on one of the desktop pieces. Make a hole and cut out that part with a jigsaw. Anyway, you should drill this hole wider than the box holding your laptop. Flipping the two pieces face-down will help reduce wood splits and also make it invisible.

Step 3: Make Pen Cups Holes
Put a circular storage onto the underside of a desktop piece to draft two circles. Drill it and sever it out with a jigsaw. Then you will have two holes for pen cups.

Step 4: Repeat Holes Cutting
Face down another desktop piece (without holes) and plot two holes from the first piece onto it. After that, cut the holes for pen cups with the same size. The hole for the laptop hideaway desk might be bigger than the hole in other desktops.
Step 5: Attach the Desktops
Stick the two pieces of desktops together with glue for wood and nails. Then face down the top piece to apply glue again. Lay another piece face down in place and fasten it to be more stable. Choose only short nails to pierce through the wood at intervals to not let the nails penetrate to the desktop surface. After that it’s time to measure the size of lap to fit the hideaway compartment.
Step 6: Make your Hideaway
This step you will build a box from plywood to suit the cutout of the desk. The hideaway should be situated firmly on the small shelf running around the hole because the hole in the top piece of desktop is a little bit bigger. If it is difficult to move the hideaway, just drill the hole in the top piece of plywood to be wide enough to slip a finger through.
Step 7: Decorate the Desktop
Tighten dentil molding around the edge of desktop with wood glue and nails.
Step 8: Create Base Parts
Make suitable size of two large boxes upon your desirable height which is adjustable for any use or your different work. Then sand and stain the parts as your want.
Step 9: Install your Desk
Find any pleasant location in your room to place and arrange the base pieces. Reinforce the top to the bases by screwing up through the top of each piece of the bases into the bottom of the desktop. Do not screw up through the surface of the desk.
