Spenco 2nd Skin Blister Kit Review

I’ve been using this product for several years, and it is fabulous. The adhesive bandages are the only blister dressings I have ever used (and I have tried them all) that stay on no matter what I do. They even stay on when wet (great under scuba fins). I do karate in bare feet, and sometimes get blisters on my feet. I stick on some second skin and a blister bandage, and I’m pain free and ready to go. No matter how much I slide across the floor, no matter how much I sweat, the dressing stays on. As much as it stays on, it is also easy to take off when I’m ready. I love this product and don’t know why it is not in every drug store.

Whomever designed the Mirage Micro has never shared a bed with another human being. Some lonely nerd, or likely a team of the untouched, designed the outflow for the Micro. See, on the earlier and awesome Ultra Mirage 2, the inflowing tube comes into your head somewhere in a plane, tangential to your face. The outflow/exhalation vent is directed ALONG this same tube, so there is only a 2-dimensional “line of annoyance” coming into your bed. This easily accommodates any sleeping position, and STILL ALLOWS THE WEARER TO SPOON WITH THEIR PARTNER.

The Mirage Micro, on the other hand, as designed by the unloved and lonely, vents the outflow/exhalation STRAIGHT AWAY FROM YOUR FACE 100% OF THE TIME. Whatever your face points at, a gentle breeze of cold room air jets out. Enjoy spooning, tucking your curves into each other? Not any more, Romeo, as the back of your partner’s head has a cold hair dryer pointed at it all night. Enjoy lying face to face, gently holding hands? Your partner will have dreams they have their head stuck out a car window. I can’t think of how to make the Mirage Micro more annoying, unless they put flashing LED’s that shine the Bat Signal(tm) wherever you face, or maybe line the intake hose with whistles. How about a laser pointer, so your cat can pounce on your lover’s face all night? Who did they test the Mirage Micro with, Catholic priests? Cadavers?

AVOID this mask, unless you wish to be left utterly alone. So very alone.

At first wearing, seems very comfortable; however blows cold air in my eye – Mahlers2nd –
When I first tried this on when being fitted for my initial mask, I liked the compact feel of this and it felt comfortable. Of course, I was sitting up with hose hanging straight down.

When I got it home, and actually started trying to sleep with it, I noticed that it blows cold air out through holes right over the nose. (All masks have to vent air — it is more of a matter of where it is done to be least disruptive to the person who is wearing the mask and whoever may be in bed with them). This had the effect of blowing air in directly into my eye which was very distracting while trying to fall asleep. If I rotated the tubing around, it pointed the air flow at one of my hands. So basically, if I don’t want cold air constantly blowing on me, I have to have every piece of skin other than my face covered up with a sheet.

In addition, because of the force and location of where the air is blowing out, this mask tends to be “noisier” than my current favorite: Respironics ComfortGel Small.

In terms of fit — the seal is great on this mask. Because of the silicone, it lasts longer than the ComfortGel and blowing air aside, it is nearly as comfortable as the ComfortGel (the ComfortGel is a bit softer which makes it a bit more comfortable).

The price of this mask is 20 bucks less than the ComfortGel but I figure I’m already using a machine that costs anywhere from 600 bucks to 2K (depending on where and how you buy it), I’m not going to skimp on the mask. 20 bucks over the course of 3-6 months is 1-2 trips to McDs or less than one snapple per day (i’m not into starbucks so i can’t give you the exchange rate there).

My other suggestion is that often I will find a good price online so I will order several masks up at one time (they don’t go bad and I have to self-pay anyway). I wound up purchasing several Mirage Micros and rather than throwing them out because I don’t like them, I will rotate them around with my ComfortGel depending on how I’m “feeling” that night.
